Why Industrial HMI Touch Screens Fail

HMI panels endure constant physical contact, temperature swings, vibration, and electrical noise. Unlike consumer touchscreens, industrial HMIs must function reliably for 10–20 years in harsh environments. When they fail, production stops.

Digitizer & Resistive Layer Wear

High-frequency touch contact degrades the resistive layers in older touch panels. Symptoms: unresponsive zones, touch drift, phantom inputs. We replace digitizers with compatible industrial-grade components.

Backlight & LCD Degradation

CCFL and LED backlights dim over time, and LCD panels develop dead pixels, color shifts, or complete failure. We source compatible LCD and backlight assemblies for all major HMI brands.

Power Supply Failures

Internal power supplies on HMI panels fail from capacitor aging and voltage spikes. We perform board-level power supply repair and replace failed capacitors and regulators.

Communication Card Failures

EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, and serial communication failures disconnect the HMI from the PLC. We diagnose and repair communication boards and firmware.

Environmental Contamination

Dust, oil mist, and moisture ingress damage internal electronics. We perform full disassembly, cleaning, conformal coating reapplication, and seal restoration.

HMI Repair vs. Replacement Cost Analysis

Replacing an industrial HMI is rarely as simple as ordering a new panel. Modern HMI software must be licensed, panel designs recertified, and operators retrained. For older Siemens TP or Allen Bradley PanelView systems, replacement means a full migration to a current platform — a project costing $10,000–$50,000+.

Factor Repair Replacement
Cost 20–50% of new panel price Full panel + software license
Program Preserved Yes No — requires migration
Lead Time 3–15 days 4–16 weeks
Operator Retraining None Required
Panel Certification Not required Required for UL/CE panels
Legacy Support Yes — all discontinued models Limited — OEM may not support migration

💡 Allen Bradley PanelView Plus 6 and Siemens TP177 panels are discontinued. We repair them — keeping your existing PLC program and operator interface without a costly migration.
